Cyprus motorways are full of public vehicles as public transportation facilities are not adequately available in all areas of the country. Roads that connect the major towns to the villages and other adjoining areas are maintained on a regular basis. These roads have up to four lane motorways. They serve as connecting routes between Limassol, Larnaca, Nicosia, Paphos and Ayia Napa. Other roads including forest roads which are not motorways are in proper condition though they may not be tarred. The roads in the mountainous regions of the country often remain closed during the winters.
The two most important motorways in Cyprus are the A1 motorway which connects Limassol and Nicosia and is often referred to as the Nicosia Limassol Highway. This motorway project was initiated to act as the vital link between the major cities of the country. The road stretches over 73 kilometers in length and includes four lane highways. It is the crucial link between the capital and the largest port town. The construction of this motorway was completed in 1984. At present a project has been undertaken to upgrade it.
This up gradation is scheduled to be completed by 2008. This project entails the construction of several flyovers to ensure easy movement of traffic. The A2 motorway branches out of the A1 motorway and is also called the Nicosia-Larnaca motorway.
