Rugby Federation in Cyprus

The Cyprus Rugby Federation controls and governs the various rugby unions. They are affiliated to the Cyprus Rugby Federation. Rugby has been played on the island almost since the 1950s. The British Army and the UN units were involved in the game at that point of time. A league was formed which comprised of six teams and matches were played within this league till 2003. The entry of a team called the Paphos Tigers into this league initiated the entry of civilian teams into the league. They made their presence felt by securing the second position jointly with another team. The Federation got its other two teams in 2004 when the Nicosia Barbarians and Limassol crusaders joined the ranks.

Rugby Federation in Cyprus set certain objectives for itself at the very outset. Its primary aim involves the promotion of the game at any given instance and to make Cyprus's rugby stand in good stead in the international rugby arena. The Cyprus Rugby Federation also aims to make the game popular with the mass and begin this
process by organizing games at the school level. The involvement of international teams plays a major role in increasing its local popularity and the Federation has its task cut out in this regard as it works on organizing events international rugby events.

The Cyprus Rugby Federation has an able organization comprising of an Executive Committee, a General Committee and several Regional Committees who look after the development of the game locally. The Rugby Federation of Cyprus organizes various competitions on the national level between the affiliated teams. The Cyprus Moufflons is very popular in this regard.

All the efforts of Cyprus Rugby Federation are directed towards the promotion of the game on the island and to make Cyprus rugby team a force to reckon with.
