GSP Stadium

The GSP Stadium or the Gymnastic Association Pancypria is the largest stadium in Cyprus. The stadium is located in Nicosia. The huge stadium can accommodate as many as 23,500 spectators. Initially the GSP Stadium stood at the place of the gymnasium of the ' Cypriot Association'. It was later rechristened as the 'Pancypria Gym'. From 1934 onwards the stadium was called 'G.S.P Stadium of Eugenia and Antonios Theodotou' in the honor of the people who played an important role in its development. In the meantime the GSP stadium at Nicosia was used as the venue for athletic competitions as well as by the different football clubs of Nicosia. Apart from the sports meets it also served as the venue of other important events. However, after a while, the construction of the Makarion Athletic Center, the events were gradually shifted to the newly erected stadium and the GSP stadium was seldom used. Finally in 1991 a step was taken towards the revival of the stadium. The stadium authorities signed an agreement with the government and the foundation of the new GSP Stadium was laid. The all new Gymnastic Association Pancypria began its functions since October 1999. Several of the soccer teams of Nicosia like the Omonia Nicosia, the Olympiakos Nicosia and the APOEL Nicosia hold their practice sessions and matches at the GSP Stadium or the Neo GSP Stadium. The national team of Cyprus also plays in this stadium. The experience of watching a sporting event live in action at a packed GSP Stadium is worth looking forward to.
