Politics of Cyprus

Politics of Cyprus show that the country is a democratic republic. The president is the head of the state as well as the head of the government. The island has got a multi party system. The executive power lies with the government. The federal legislative power is shared by the government and the House of Representatives. The independent judiciary can neither be controlled by the executive nor by the legislature.

The Politics of Cyprus reveal that it is a divided country. The southern two third is ruled by the legal government, the Republic of Cyprus, while the northern one-third is governed by the Turkish Cypriot authorities. However it used to have a presidential government in 1960 before getting divided. The country got divided in 1974.

The division of the country has always remained a problem of the politics in Cyprus. This problem has been taken to NATO as both the Greeks and the Turkish are members of this organization. Recently the border between the two sides has opened. But the attempt to reunite the island according to the terms of a United Nations-sponsored initiative has turned to be a failure.

Being a multi-party state Cyprus has got many political parties such as: NEOS Cyprus Socialdemocratic Youth
The United Democrats Party
Cyprus Green Party
DIKO-Cyprus Democratic Party
Movement of Social Democrats EDEK
AKEL
Dimokratikos Synagermos

Though both the Greeks and the Turks started with an emphasis on unity they ended with extreme collision due to minor differences in policies. Cyprus Politics continues to be unstable even today.
