Cuba Libre or Cuban liberation refers to the period of political and administrative unrest that prevailed in Cuba during the period between the end of the 10 year war (1868-1878) and the final Independence of Cuba from Spanish regime in 1895. The chief reason for the uprising of Cuban people was due to the practice of slavery, a practice which was much supported by the Spanish rulers. Though the 10 years war ended in with the Treaty of Zanjón, this did not provide a complete solution to the problem of slavery. So even after the war the Maceo brothers, Maximo Gómez, Calixto Garcia and others were still contemplating over the issue of Cuba Libre. These men along with others joined hands to bring about the final Independence of Cuba or Cuba Libre to overthrow Spanish decree in Cuba.
The Role Of Jose Marti Behind Cuba Libre:
Jose Marti the renowned Cuban poet, politician and journalist played a major role in awakening the consciousness of the general mass. His active participation in Cuban politics molded the subject matter of his major literary works. His three major literary collections comprise Ismaelillo (1882), Versos sencillos (1891) and Versos Libre. Jose Marti was born of humble parents and made a mark in the revolution at an early of 17 when he was jailed off to Spain. In Spain Jose Marti obtained his degree in law and philosophy. His contribution to the movement of Cuba Libre is as indispensable. Marti was finally killed in an encounter a the onset of the Cuba Independence in 1895.
Cuba Libre as a movement gained recognition and success not only due to the slaves who suffere but there benevolent masters who sowed the seeds of Cuba Libre in speech of Grito de Yara in 1868.
