Joe Cuba


Gilberto Calderon,also known as Joe Cuba, is the legendary figure in the history of Cuban music. He was born in New York city in 1931. He was the founder and band leader of Joe Cuba Sextet. He is considered to be the first Latino/Nuyorrican Salsa artist who has brought a revolution in the genre of Cuban music by including English lyrics in his songs like Sock It To Me. His group-the Joe Cuba Sextet is home to the timbales, vibraphones, piano, bass and singer.

  • 1931 : Joe Cuba was born in New York City.
  • 1950: Joe Cuba began his music career with La Alfarona X.
  • 1955: Founded Joe Cuba Sextet and his vibraharp sound caught on
  • 1962: ' To Be With You ' was recorded for Seeco Records and the band soared to its popularity. Nick Jimenez's arrangements and the vocal support of Cheo Feliciano and Jimmy Sabaster did magic on the public.
  • 1967: The recording of the song 'Bang Bang' banged the number one position in the US top charts. It, along with 'El Pito' sold millions of copies, especially in the boogaloo era when majority of the popular bands were put out of work.
