Fidel Castro

Among the Revolutionaries of Cuba, the most well known and the most revered public figure is Fidel Castro . Born in Cuba, he was a born rebel which was evident in his first organized rebellion, at the age of thirteen, on his father's plantation groves. The idea of an ideal Cuba was at the back of his mind when he devised his revolutionary strategies. Following are the chronological stages in his political career:

  • 1947: Castro joined the Cuban People's Party. Its campaign against corruption, injustice, poverty, unemployment and low economy was what drove him to join this party. Fidel Castro joined hands with the party members to fight against bribery which had eaten away the roots of the acting government. The party raised its voice against the benefits reaped by the incoming of the United States corporation that had factories and offices in Cuba. Eventually, the government seemed more concerned for the corporation's benefits.
  • 1953: Fidel Castro decided that the time was calling for war and the only way to uproot the autocratic rule of Batista was to wage a war against it. Hence, Castro with an armed group of 123 men and women attacked the Moncada Army Barracks. Unfortunately, the rebellion ended in disaster for the party.
  • 1956: After building a strong ground in arms and ammunitions, Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, Juan Almeida, and 80 other rebels arrived in Cuba. This group came to be known as the July 26 Movement, a name they had inherited from the day they had attacked the Moncada Barracks. They had launhed this garrison to build a base camp in Sierra Maestra which tragically ended up consisting of 16 men and 12 weapons. The next few months were spent building up the stock of weapons.
  • 1958: 45 Organizations which included the who's who of Cuba signed an open letter supporting the July 26 Movement which became a winning tool for the group.
  • 1959: Batista fled Cuba and Fidel Castro marched into Havana and became the leader.
The ideas of Fidel Castro were as great as his career. He drove his party with the soul motive of driving away diseases, illiteracy, alcohol, drugs, gambling and prostitution. Cuba is nothing but the consolidation of his holy ideas.
