History of England in the World Cup
England is considered to be the native land of the sport, cricket. In 1975, the World Cup, the biggest cricket tournament of the world was held for the first time in England. Since 1975, the first three World Cup tournaments were hosted by England. In 1999, England became the host of this great cricket tournament for the fourth time. The country has always been a prominent name in the world of cricket. Runner-up for three times, England has never won the World Cup.
- The first World Cup was held in England. In the tournament, England lost the semifinal match to Australia by 4 wickets.
- England was also the host of the second World Cup in 1979. This time, the English team reached the final, but could not bag the title over West Indies. The West Indians defeated England with a margin of 92 runs.
- The third World Cup was held in England in 1983. In the semifinal, the English team lost to India by 6 wickets.
- The 1987 ICC cricket World Cup was hosted jointly by India and Pakistan. On this occasion, England lost the final match to Australia by 7 runs.
- Australia and New Zealand hosted the 1992 Cricket World Cup. England again reached the final and lost the match against Pakistan by 22 runs.
- The Indian sub-continent hosted the 1996 ICC Cricket World Cup. England reached the quarter finals of the 1996 World Cup. In the quarterfinal, Sri Lanka recorded a win over England by 5 wickets.
- England again hosted the 1999 ICC Cricket World Cup. On their home ground, the English team could not clear the first round of the tournament.
- South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya became the first African countries to host the 2003 Cricket World Cup. This time again England was unable to make it to the super six.
