Once a part of the British colony, the United Republic of Tanzania attained freedom from its colonizers in the 1960s. After its freedom, the country as it exists was formed by the assimilation of the two nations of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. It also happens to be the largest country in the east of Africa and also the most diverse in terms of landscape, flora and fauna.

the United Republic of Tanzania is located in the East coast of the African continent. Its coastal region is bordered by the Indian ocean. The immediate political neighbors of the United Republic of Tanzania are Mozambique and Kenya.

While the coastal regions are plain, advancement towards the inland will find the land rising into plateaus, while further on the land ascends more to form hills and mountains. The highest point in the country is Mt Kilimanjaro. It also has the largest lake in Africa, Lake Victoria, and the second deepest lake in the world, Lake Tanganyika, forming its boundary.

CLIMATE OF TANZANIA

the climate in the United Republic of Tanzania varies with variations in the landscape of the country. In general, the climate comprises of warm wet summers and cold dry winters. While the temperatures are more in the mainland, it is tropical in the coastal regions and in the islands. The summer season lasts from December to March; and the winters from June to October.

FLORA AND FAUNA OF TANZANIA:

the flora of the United Republic of Tanzania comprises of typical savannah species. The country is scattered with wooded grasslands throughout. There are, however, several other types of flora varying from region to region. For instance, there are dense forests of hardwood and softwood trees in the places where rainfall is high; where rainfall is less and the land dry bushes and thickets thrive; the highlands in the United Republic of Tanzania are grassy expanses and the coastal regions are blanketed with mangroves. The land has an equally diverse animal, avian, marine and reptile fauna – with almost four million species or more. The list that contains animals includes the lion, the giraffe, hippopotamus, various types of monkeys, zebra, elephant, antelope and the rhinoceros. The range of birds is so vast that they include almost 827 species of birds between the ostrich and the warbler. There are some 60,000 species of insects in the United Republic of Tanzania approximately. The islands of Zanzibar and Pemba, whish are a part of the country, also house some exclusive and rare species like the Syke's monkey, galagos, tree coney, fruit-eating and insectivorous bats, Kirk's colobus, genets, elephant shrews, mongooses, duiker antelope, small shrews, rats, squirrel mice leopard, civet and giant rat.
