Introduction : Once the epicenter of the East Slavic civilization that flourished in the medieval times, the country of Ukraine – and specially its capital Kiev – is steeped in a rich cultural and historical past. It gained its freedom for the final time, in 1991, when the USSR disintegrated. The name of the country is said to have its origins in an old word of Slavic source. However, both the Ukranian word “Krayina” and the old Slavic word “Kraj” boil down to the same meaning – ‘land' or ‘country'.
