Introduction

once a part of the U.S.S.R., the Republic of Tajikistan is broken up into three provinces. These provinces are Viloyati Mukhtori Kuhistoni Badakhshon, Viloyati Khatlon and Viloyati Sughd. Though finally conquered by the Arabs who induced the spread of Islam, Tajikistan still retains a lot of Chinese influences. The term “Tajik” is representative of people who are Iranian by descent and speak Persian. So, “Tajikistan” means ‘land inhabited by the Tajiks'.

Location of Tajikistan

Tajikistan is a land locked land mass located in the middle of the continent of Asia, which is better known by the name of ‘Middle East'. Portions of the country of Tajikistan fall both in the northern hemisphere and the eastern hemisphere. The immediate neighbors of Tajikistan is China in the east; Afghanistan in the south, Uzbekistan in the west and Kyrgyzstan in the north.

Physical Map of Tajikistan

the first and foremost feature of the country of Tajikistan is the fact that it is landlocked. The other most important thing about Tajikistan is that most of its area is covered with mountains. There is the Alay Range in the north and the Pamir Range to the southeast. As a result of the mountains there are also several meandering rivers that traverse the course of the country carving out valleys. There are also many glaciers and lakes to be found to the north of the country. In fact, the highest point of the country, which doubles as the largest glacier outside the Polar Regions, is the Fedchenko Glacier. The lowest point in the country is the southwest of the country and is called the Fergana Valley. The other valleys of importance are the Kofarnihon Valley and the Vakhsh Valley. The most important rivers in the country emanating from the mountains are the Syr Darya, Amu Darya/ Panj, Vakhsh/ Surkhob, Pamir and Bartang.

Climate of Tajikistan

due to the mountainous terrain, climatic conditions in Tajikistan are entirely dependent on the altitude. So, the country as a whole has sub-tropical to arid climatic conditions. While the low lying terrain in the south west of the country sports a sub-tropical climate, higher up it is arid and dry. Also, at higher altitudes summers are mild and pleasant while winters are freezing. Rainfall in Tajikistan is temperate, but decreases with altitude. The highest precipitation is received by the Fedchenko Glacier to the east of Tajikistan.

Flora and Fauna of Tajikistan

being mostly mountainous, the Flora and fauna of Tajikistan are also dominantly that found in mountainous regions. Exotic fruits and flowers are to be found in abundance throughout the country. Apricots, apples and grapes are some of the fruits to be found in abundance. Flowers in Tajikistan chiefly comprise of wildflowers draping vast expanses of the hillsides.
