Introduction

known best for being a Viking nation, the Kingdom of Sweden is divided into nine provinces, all of which have a rich historical heritage. This is one nation where most of the little population is concentrated in the cities. But you do not have mush to worry about as the cities have as much to offer you as the countryside and the woodlands. And even if you escape the clutches of the alluring scenic beauty of Sweden, the rich cultural heritage of the country is sure to get you. The other good thing about Sweden is the fact that it has avoided getting involved in wars for around two whole centuries.

Location of Sweden

Sweden is located in the northwest of the continent of Europe. It lies way into the northern hemisphere.

Its immediate political neighbors are Norway to the west and the northwest; Finland to the east, from which it is divided by the Gulf of Bothnia and the Baltic Sea; and Denmark to the southwest. It is also bordered by the Kattegat, and Skagerrak.

Physical Map of Sweden

the topography of Sweden is basically made of plain and low lands. Most of these flats contain the major lakes, like Lake Vanern and Lake Vattern, in Sweden. However, to the west of the country the land elevates to form mountains. In fact, Sweden is separated from Norway in the northwest by the Kjolen Mountain range. The highest point of the Sewdish landscape, Mt. Kebnekaise, lies on this very range. Several rivers, which flow through Sweden, too originate from these mountains. The names of some of these rivers are Indal, Dal, Lule , Klor and Ume. There is a small group of islands to be found near the coast of the Baltic Sea. The most famous and the largest of the islands are Oland and Gotland.

Climate of Sweden

Sweden generally has a pretty pleasant climate. However, there are deviations depending on the terrain and the specific position and its topography. So, while the southwest of the country is the best place to be – with mild warm summers and mild winters punctuated by rain, the middle and the eastern regions face more chills and are relatively drier in winter and have moderate climate. Then there is the northern region of Sweden which is sub-artic and experiences plenty of precipitation in winter in the form of snow, and sports mild and cool summers.

Flora and Fauna of Sweden

the flora of Sweden varies with the variation in the topography of the land. For instance, the northern regions are covered with coniferous vegetation, while the south has deciduous flora. The chief type of trees and plants that populate the country are beech, oak, linden, ash, maple, elm and rare orchids of many types. The fauna of Sweden has wide ranges in animal, bird and fish life. Some of the animals found in Sweden are the bears, lynx, elks, moose, foxes, roe deer and hares. The bird life in the country is a treat to even non-ornithologists. The list comprises of black cock, woodcock, duck, partridge, swan and many others too. Fish in Sweden too are aplenty. Some of the popular varieties of fish are cod, mackerel, salmon, pike, herring and Baltic herring. The other fauna to be sighted in Sweden is the rare Baltic seal.
