Hockey



10 countries will be participating in hockey at Commonwealth Games 2010. There will be men's as well as women's team from each of these 10 country.
Hockey was included as a sport for the first time at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. There are a total of three medals, for which the teams will compete at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

Brief about the game
The 10 teams are divided into two pools consisting of five countries each. The two pools are named Pool A and Pool B respectively. The team which leads in each pool will play against each other to proceed further in the tournament.

Rules
Rules of International Hockey Federation (FIH) are used for the Commonwealth Games. There is a goalie, defenders, center and wings in a team. Their main task of a team is to score as many goals as they can, and prevent the opposition from scoring any goals. At the end of the stipulated hours of play, the team having the maximum number of goals is declared winner.



Categories and events
In hockey there is just one team event in two categories. Men and women hockey teams from participating countries compete for gold, silver or bronze medals.

Previous winners of the game
At the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Australia won gold medal in both men's and women's categories. Pakistan won the silver while Malaysia won the bronze medal in men's hockey. In Women's hockey India won the silver medal and England won the bronze medal.
