Colombia Social Classes

Colombia social classes are the outcome of the Spanish influence in the 16th Century. In the 1980s, the Colombian society was characterized with different strata. The rural and the urban society were marked by different social systems, where the society boasts of a well-defined class membership.

Talking about the social classes of Colombia, it can be said that society of the urban areas of Colombia is characterized by a flexible social system. The urban society of Colombia is marked with an increasing middle class and a greater participation in the national politics. But the social system of the rural areas projects a rigid hierarchical structure.

In the 1980s, there was a strong debate on the definition of the social class in the territory of Colombia. The composition of the middle class, the role of the upper classes, the importance of the middle classes, etc, were the major points of disagreements among the scientists. In fact, there was an anomaly in the definition of the social classes in Colombia.

It was in the mid-1980s that the society of Colombia was divided into four distinct social classes, namely the upper class, the middle class, the lower class and the masses. Besides, there were two major transitional sub-divisions, viz. the new rich and the upper lower class.

It is noteworthy that the social classes at Colombia were divided according to their occupation, income, life-style, education, family background and power. Colombians had been class conscious; therefore, the Colombia social classes play an important role in the society of Colombia.
