Harare Music


Music has always been a part of Harare art, culture and entertainment. Harare music is ebullient. Music in Harare exhibits traces of African and European influences. Harare music follows Zimbabwean music styles, which are a mix of both pop and folk styles. Mbira is a local African instrument, on which most of the Zimbabwean music is based. Chimuranga, Shona music, soukous, rumba and rock and roll genres of music are also prevalent in Harare.

Musical Bands in Harare

Music in Harare is currently dominated by a number of music bands. The Harare Mambo Band and Harrare are two major musical bands in Harare. The Harare
Mambo Band is credited for introducing modern music in Zimbabwe. Green Jangano founded the band in 1957. Since its inception, the band has been nurturing young musicians. The band also caters to the local music community. The band members earned their livelihood by performing in live shows. Some of the hits of the band include Bohera, Tamba Suzana and Mbuya Nehanda.

Harrare is another group, which plays Zimbabwean dance music in Europe. This band blends different music styles like Jit and Jive and traditional rhythms. Besides performing in live shows, this band also conducts workshops and sessions to nurture the creative talent of the upcoming musicians.
