Lake Chivero


Lake Chivero is ideally located in the southwest of Harare in the Manyame River. It was earlier known as Lake McIlwaine. This lake possesses a length of 8 kilometers and a depth of 27 meters. The lake can hold about 250 000 million liters of water. The dam wall of the lake measures 400 meters.

It took a total of two and a half years to complete Lake Chivero. It was finally opened for public viewing in 1952. This lake is the main source of drinking water for the people of Harare. The water is also used for irrigation purposes and commercial fishing.

Lake Chivero, Zimbabwe holds several fishing tournaments. Some of the fishes that are found in the lake are Common Grass Carp, Tiger fish, Black bream, Clarius Garicpnus, Yellow fish, Green headed bream,
Robustus, Barbel, Hunyani salmon, Aquilla, Oreochomus Niloticus and Nebulosa.

There are several picnic spots, lodges, caravans and chalets for the tourists by the Chivero Lake. The water of the lake is drawn from a borehole. One of the major attractions of the place is the Lake Chivero Recreational Park. It is covered with miombo and brachystegia woodland. One can spot animals like monkey, giraffe, black backed jackal, zebra, white rhino, pangolin, ostrich, bush squirrel and several species of birds in this park.

Lake Chivero of Addis Ababa is covered with blue-green algae that are a major threat to the marine life. The blue-green algae produce toxins and algal blooms that lead to the death of the marine animals. Proper steps have to be taken in order to free the water from eutrophication.
