Harare Education


Harare education system works within the framework of the educational structure of Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe owns the credit of having the highest literacy rate in Africa. The academic year of Harare starts in January and ends in December. One has to undergo 7 years of primary schooling and 6 years of secondary schooling in Harare. Thereafter, a student can get admission in a university.

The primary schools in Harare are divided into Grades 1 to 7. One is entitled for admission to Grade 1 on completion of 6 years of age. English is the medium of instruction in the schools. Ndebele or Shona are also taught side by side as a subject. At the end of Grade 7, one has to give examination on four subjects, which are Shona or Ndebele, Mathematics, Content and English.

The secondary schools of Harare are divided into Forms I to VI. Admission is open to students aged 12-13 years and is enrolled on the basis of their performance at Grade 7. The education system of Harare at the secondary level is divided into three stages, namely:
  • ZJC (Zimbabwe Junior Certificate) for Forms I and II
  • 'O' level for Forms III and IV
  • 'A' level for Forms V and VI
Subjects like English, Mathematics, Bible Knowledge, Science, Shona or Ndebele and a Practical Subject forms the ZJC Core Curriculum. Practical Subject means subjects like Metalwork, Food and Nutrition, Agriculture, Fashion and Fabrics, Technical Drawing and Woodwork.
