Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam. The name has been given by Nguyen Dynasty, which means ‘around the bend of the river or River Interior’. It was the oldest capital in Southeast Asia. The city was the political center of an independent Vietnam from 1010 to 1802. During the Chinese domination, it was called Tống B́nh and Long Đỗ. In 1408, the Chinese troops invaded the city from the Ming Dynasty. Later in 1428, Lê Lợi, the founder of the Le Dynasty, liberated it from Chinese rule. The French occupied Hanoi in 1873 and after 1887, it became the capital of French Indochina. Later in 1940, the Japanese occupied the city and liberated it in 1945. From 1945 to 1976, it served as the capital of North Vietnam. The Vietnam War affected the city a lot. After the war, on July 2, 1976 with the reunification of North and South Vietnam, Hanoi became the capital of the whole of Vietnam.
Area & Location: Located on the right bank of the Red River, the city is situated at 21°2' Latitude North and 105°51' Longitude East. Hanoi which lies 1,760 km north of Ho Chi Minh City, covers an area of 921sq. km. It has a population of 3,083,800 with a density of 3,348 per sq. km.
