Porlamar was founded in the year 1536, and was originally named Puerto de la Mar. However the people later simplified it to Porlamar. The city was initially a quiet fishing village, but over the years it developed into a great commercial and urban center.

Pampatar Castle is a beautiful, historical and well-maintained castle and people enter it through a bridge. Situated to the north of Porlamar Venezuela, is a religious center, known as El Valle. The beautiful Church of El Valle features the image of the island's virgin. The Museum Santiago Marino displays impressive colonial architecture. Caracola beach and Playa Guacuco are spectacular beaches, located close to Porlamar.
