Itchan Kala

Itchan Kala is the walled inner town of the city of Khiva in Uzbekistan. The city of Khiva is divided into two parts. The outer town is known as the Dichan Kala and the inner town was named the Itchan kala. Itchan Kala in Khiev, was one of the major halting places for caravans in the Great Silk Route. The town has several moslem. UNESCO has declared it as a World Heritage Site because of the old monuments and the remnants of the ancient architecture. Itchan Kala is recognized as one the the finest historical towns along with Samarkhand and Bukhara.

Remnants of ancient monuments are exists in Itchan Kala. Many masolems and madrasas are found here. The Djuma Mosque is an extraordinary structure. Two grand palaces built at the beginning of the 19th century by Alla Kulli Khan are the pride of the city. Itchan Kala is protected by brick walls which are 10 meters high.

The Djuma Mosque in Itchan Kala is located in the center of town. The mosque was re built in the 18th century. The architecture bears resemblance to the typical Iranian mosques of those times. The mosque is surrounded by brick walls. There is a single hall inside the mosque for offering prayers . The ceiling is supported by 215 wooden pillars. Small openings are present in the ceiling for enough light and ventilation. Trees, flowers and bushes are intricately carved symbolizing peace and tranquility. The pillars are beautifully ornated with geometric patterns and Arabic script.

Itchan Kala at Khiva, is a fascinating historical city which is intimidating and captivating. It is a live museum of ancient architecture.
