Remnants of ancient monuments are exists in Itchan Kala. Many masolems and madrasas are found here. The Djuma Mosque is an extraordinary structure. Two grand palaces built at the beginning of the 19th century by Alla Kulli Khan are the pride of the city. Itchan Kala is protected by brick walls which are 10 meters high.
The Djuma Mosque in Itchan Kala is located in the center of town. The mosque was re built in the 18th century. The architecture bears resemblance to the typical Iranian mosques of those times. The mosque is surrounded by brick walls. There is a single hall inside the mosque for offering prayers . The ceiling is supported by 215 wooden pillars. Small openings are present in the ceiling for enough light and ventilation. Trees, flowers and bushes are intricately carved symbolizing peace and tranquility. The pillars are beautifully ornated with geometric patterns and Arabic script.
Itchan Kala at Khiva, is a fascinating historical city which is intimidating and captivating. It is a live museum of ancient architecture.
