The Wichita State University was founded in the year 1886 by the Rev. Joseph Homer Parker, it was then known as the Fairmount College. The classes finally began in the year 1895. Financial constraints threatened the college and the first campaign for public ownership failed. In 1926, a renewed effort was made and the Municipal University of Wichita became the first city institution. The Municipal University opened in the fall of 1926. After the Second World War, in the year 1963, the legislative approval for a new state university was finally approved and then the present campus was build. The Wichita State University celebrated its centenary in 1995-96.

The Wichita State University has business, education, engineering, fine arts, health professions, liberal arts and science colleges under it. It offers undergraduate degree programs in more than 200 areas of study. It offers master degree programs in 54 programs. It offers graduate degrees in 26 programs and doctoral degrees in 11 programs. Moreover, the Wichita State University also offers programs in continuing education and student exchange.The courses range from marketing, accounting, business administration, exercise science, industrial engineering, engineering management, aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering to art education,

nursing, music education,graphic design, chemistry, English, economics, sociology, geology, philosophy, political science and creative writing among many others.

The libraries in Wichita State University have computers and private rooms for group study. The Wichita State University has 3 museums –

Martin H. Bush Outdoor Sculpture Collection – This has about 70 priceless works.

Ulrich Museum of Art – contains more than 6,000 modern and contemporary pieces.

Lowell Holmes Anthropology Museum – has a wide range of ancient artifacts and cultural products.

Rhatigan Student Center's Gallery – displays a wide variety of art work by students.

In order to get an admission to the Wichita State University you need to have an ACT composite score of 21 or above or a minimum combined SAT-I score of 980 or rank in the top one-third of the high school's graduating class.
