London station Waterloo is a major railway station and transport exchange complex in London, England. London station Waterloo is located in the London Borough of Lambeth, near to the South Bank. The London Waterloo station complex consist four linked railway stations and a bus station. The original mainline London Waterloo Station was opened on 11 July 1848 by the London and South Western Railway. Now it has become London's gateway for train passengers from France and Belgium. London Waterloo is the busiest station in the UK. The station in London has been named after the Battle of Waterloo, in which Napoleon was defeated. It seems the station's name has its connection with the battle but it was only an indirect connection. It has been named by following the name of Waterloo Bridge, located near by the station. This bridge was constructed few decades before the construction of railway station.
London Waterloo station is linked to the South Bank by an important walkway. Once it was possible to walk directly by these walkways and footbridges the whole way from the open space of Waterloo station to that of Charing Cross railway station located on the north side of the River Thames, but with the demolition of a part of the Waterloo walkway and the reconstruction of the Hungerford Footbridge it is no longer possible.
