The city of Washington, DC , the capital of United States of America is named after the first President of the United States of America (USA), George Washington. The initials DC stands for District of Columbia. Previously it was called Federal City or Washington City. However today it is identified with simply Washington or just DC (the District) .

The city houses the main offices of the three divisions of the government of USA. The headquarters of World Bank and the International Monetary Fund lie in this city. It is home to the world renowned White House and the Pentagon.

The geographical coordinates of Washington, DC are 38°53'42?N, 77°02'11?W. The city covers an area of 68.3 square miles of which 61.4 square miles is covered by land and the rest is covered by water. The city is bordered by the state of Maryland towards the southeastern side, northeastern side and northwestern side. Towards the western side it is bordered with Virginia. The city is gifted with three natural watercourses namely Potomac River, Rock Creek and the Anacostia River.

The map of Washington is highlighted by the presence of features like the Theodore Roosevelt Island, Columbia Island, the Three Sisters Islands and Hains Point.

The climate of Washington is marked by the coming of the four seasons. The weather of Washington DC is of the Mid-Atlantic U.S type. The summers are hot and wet with temperatures soaring up to 33 °C in the months of July and August. In winters the temperatures dip to -6 to -2 °C during December to February.
