Important Festivals: Washington D.C. has an important cultural heritage due to being the seat of the federal government of the United States. Many festivals and events connected with nationalism and patriotism are celebrated in Washington D.C. Some of the important festivals of Washington D.C. that are celebrated widely are National Independence Day Celebration, National Tree Lighting, and National Cherry Blossom Festival. The National Tree Lighting festival is an annual tree lighting festival in which the National Christmas Tree is lighted. This heralds a two-week Pageant of Peace, which is a celebration of caroling, music, and many other events. Customs and Traditions: A legend is popular in Washington D.C. that French engineer, Pierre Charles L'Enfant, designed Washington city in such a way so as to confuse enemy troops if they attacked the city. Anyone who attempts to travel in the streets of Washington will understand why this belief came about. If you are driving in Washington D.C., remember that lettered streets run east and west, numbered streets run north and south, and all diagonal streets are named after states.
