Washington D.C. is the capital of the United States of America. The D.C. in Washington D.C. stands for District Columbia, which is the federal district in which Washington is located. The city derives its name from George Washington, who was the architect of the American Revolution and the first President of the United States. The District of Columbia and the city of Washington are governed by a single government, so for all practical purposes, they are considered to be a single entity. The centers of all three branches of the US federal government are located in Washington D.C. Besides this, the headquarters of most federal agencies, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund are also located here.
