Terre Haute , literally means High Ground in French. It is Indiana's ninth largest city with an area of 83.1 sq.km. Terre Haute IN is located on the Wabash River in Vigo County. The city of Terre Haute is an important industrial, agricultural, financial, cultural and educational center.

Early History about Terre Haute

French explorers in the 18 th century originally used the name Terre Haute to describe the raised land near the Wabash Basin. A Quiatenon Indian village was also located nearby. In 1811, during the historic Tecumseh's War, a settlement called Fort Harrison was established in the area under the leadership of William Henry Harrison. White settlers like Herbert Kitchell and the Terre Haute Land Company acquired Indian lands and founded the Terre Haute Village in 1816. By 1832, the village had over a 1000 residents. The region gained in importance with the establishment of the Vigo County Courthouse in 1818. By the 1840s, the town was an important business center, finally becoming Terre Haute city in 1853.

Terre Haute IN has a population of 60,614 people according to the 2000 US Census. The population has a majority of White Americans at 86.26%, 9.77% of the population are African Americans and the remaining minority is either Native American, Asian or Pacific Islander.

10.58% of the population has Hispanic ancestry. The population density is 736.8 persons per sq.km and there are about 22,870 households. The male to female ratio is skewed at 97.3 males for every 100 females. The average income is US$ 28,018. 19.2% of the population is below the poverty line.

January is the coolest month with average lows of 18 o F with heavy snowfall. Precipitation is highest in the months from May to July. Autumn and Spring are relatively pleasant with mild precipitation.
