Tallahassee the capital of Florida is situated in the Leon district of Florida. It was in the year 1824 that Tallahassee became the capital of Florida. As per the population census of 2004 Tallahassee holds a population of 156,512 approximately, but the metropolitan area of Tallahassee is estimated to be 255,500 approximately.
Tallahassee is a Muskogean Indian term which means "old fields" or "old town." This indicates that the Creek or Seminole Indians from Georgia and Alabama came and settled here around the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It is presumed that before them this region was inhabited by the Apalachee Tribe.
Later during the rule of the Florida government this rugged capital developed into a town and in the year 1845 a stonework building of the revival period of Greece was converted into the state capital building and now is referred as the “old building”.

In the year 1970 the new capital building was constructed at Tallahassee.
After the American Civil War, a large number of industries of Florida shifted to the southern and eastern regions of the country. As the period of slavery ended the major industries of cotton and tobacco began to suffer, and citrus, lumber, naval stores, cattle ranching and tourism emerged as the other major industries of the region. The wealthy people from the north purchased the earlier and important plantations of the Tallahassee area to use as hunting preserves during winters.
Tallahassee has grown rapidly with the passing years. The government and research services associated with the state, Florida A&M University, and Florida State University have shown remarkable development.
