The relatively small city of South St Paul is located in the Dakota County of the state of Minnesota and lies by the side of the Mississippi river about 10 km south -southeast of the capital city of St Paul in Minnesota. Lying to the southeast of west St Paul , the city is has a total geographical area of 15.9 square km, which had been the estimate according to the 2000 census of the United States Census Bureau. Out of the total 15.9 square km, 14.9 square km is occupied by land and the remaining 1.0 square km by water. The city of South St Paul witnessed its first settlements in the year 1853 when it had replaced the site of the Native American Village.

The population of the city according to the 2000 census is about 20,167 out of which 92.63% are White, 1.28% African-American, 0.57% Native American, 0.01% Pacific Islanders and 2.80% from other ethnic communities. According to the census in the year 2000, the median income for a household in the city is $45,216 and the per capita income is $21,396. But, it has also been simultaneously recorded that 6.1% of the city's population live below the poverty line.


The city is widely known throughout the world for its large stockyards of meatpacking industries . In fact, the first meatpacking stockyard was opened in the city in the year of 1887. The city is known for having the largest public livestock market in the whole of US. This livestock market is organized besides the Mississippi river. The major industries of the city on which its economy depends are manufacturing of parachute safety systems, metal products, valves and hydrants.

The city faces quite a similar kind of weather like that of St Paul. However, its summers have normally cloudy skies with occasional showers and thunderstorms. Winter temperatures can reach below freezing level. Although the city is not well known as a tourist place, it houses some beautiful parks which serve as recreational sites for the residents of the city.

The city is also significant for being the birthplace of some very important nationals. Amongst them, worth mentioning is, James P. Shannon, former Roman Catholic bishop from the Diocese of St Paul and Tim Powlenty, the Governor of Minnesota.
