Located in the heart of St Louis the St Louis County Library serves more than 870,000 people within an area of 460 square mile. With over 2 million cataloged items it is one of the largest circulating public libraries in the country. St Louis County Library works with the mission to support and develop the society by providing free access to knowledge and information.
Library card: One can get a library card at any St. Louis County Library Branch. This can be gained by furnishing identification (such as a driver's license) showing name, current address and a photograph of the applicant. Library cards are free to those who live in or pay taxes to certain districts like St. Louis County, St. Louis City, or St. Charles County. A card is $50 per family, per year for anyone who lives outside.

Fines and Charges: Fines are charged as small incentive to encourage patrons to return borrowed materials on time. Fines are charged as follows:
14 day items: Books, Paperbacks, Board Books, Periodicals, Pamphlets, Maps, Government Documents, Compact Discs, Audiocassettes, DVDs/Videocassettes are charged at a rate of $ .10 per day.
7 days or less items: Books, Compact Discs, Audiocassettes, DVDs/Videocassettes Documents, Compact Discs, Audiocassettes, DVDs/Videocassettes are charged at the rate of $ .25 per day

An item becomes over due if it is returned a day after the due date.
Maximum overdue charges :
14 day items: Books, Compact Discs, Audiocassettes, DVDs/Videocassettes have a maximum overdue charges of $ 4
14 day items: Pamphlets, Maps, Government Documents, Periodicals, Paperbacks, Board Books have a maximum overdue charges of $ 1
7 days or less items: Books, Compact Discs, Audiocassettes, DVDs/Videocassette have maximum overdue charges of $ 10
The maximum amount of fines allowed on a library card is $25.00. Fines exceeding this amount must be paid before the validity of the card expires.
Renewals:
Most Library items can be renewed in person at any St. Louis County Library branch, by telephone, or through the online catalog provided there is no hold or request for another patron. The normal renewal period is two weeks.
The maximum number or renewals permitted on an item is three.
