Springfield is the capital of the U.S. state of Illinois. Founded in 1819, the city was made the capital in 1837. It became the county seat of Sangamon County in 1823. It is a home to the Springfield campus of the University of Illinois. Springfield also serves as a home to the Bunn Company, the global leader in coffee-making equipment and supplies. Academics and health care are not only important sectors that take a place in the city, but also colleges and hospitals play a major role in the city. Springfield, the seat of a Catholic diocese, is a hub of government action, business activity, arts and cultural affairs. The city is also known as the "Chilli capital of the World".



Area & Location:As a city which lies along the historic highway, Route 66, Springfield is located at 39°46'60? Latitude North and 89°39'1? Longitude West. The city covers a total area of 156.2 sq. km of which 139.9 sq. km is land and 16.3 sq. km is water. Around 111,500 people reside in the city.

Economy: Machinery, food processing, electric equipment, chemical products,

printing and publishing, fabricated metal products, transportation equipment, petroleum and coal are the major industries in Springfield. Corn, soybeans, hogs, cattle, dairy products and wheat are the main agriculture of the city that contributes much to its economy. Stable service-sector employers and governmental institutions, premier health care and medical complexes favor the economic stability of the city.

Tourist Attractions: Springfield is well known for many historical sites especially that are centered around the former President Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln Tomb, a national park site including his home after marriage as well as the neighborhood; the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices State Historic Site are some of them that represents the great and respected former President and his life. The Old State Capitol, the Illinois State Capitol and the Executive Mansion are the other attractions of the city. The famous Adams Wildlife Sanctuary, Washington Park Botanical Gardens and Henson Robinson Zoo lure the tourists to the city.
