The area in which Bossier is located was earlier known as the Elysian Groves Plantation in the 1830s. Owned by the Cane family, native crops like cotton and corn were grown in this area and traded across Southern America. The area of Cane's Landing has some Civil War history since steamboat loads of young Confederate soldiers left this area to fight the Union Army. The area is also significant since many of the early settlers' wagons passed through Bossier on their way to the Mid-western states. The discovery of oil in the area made it gain prominence. It was touted as a popular trading hub with the advent of the Railroad and through the Red River waterway. The Riverfront was promoted by the Stockwell family and they sold parcels of land to the settlers. From a population of 775 in 1910, the city rapidly grew in both area and populace to be termed as the “Fastest Growing City in Louisiana” in 1950 with strength of 55000. In 1928, the city was chosen to house the major Barksdale Airforce Base. Shreveport Bossier City is a major gambling hotspot for holidaying slot machine junkies and high rollers alike.
