Town Hall Seattle

The architecture of Town Hall Seattle is fascinating as it is reminiscent of the designs and styles of the Roman Revival. The Town Hall of Seattle is not only famous for its architecture but for the fact that it is an important cultural center of the community. It is an ideal place where various facets of culture, music, civic discussions, arts and humanities and other programs of the community are showcased. The Town Hall was inaugurated on March 1999.

The Town Hall of Seattle is situated in a historic building, constructed in the style of Roman revival. This remarkable structure was built by the 4th Church of Christ, Scientist in 2 stages between 1916 and 1922. The construction of the edifice took place at the zenith of the Christian Science movement. During this time fine textures and ample spaces could be easily afforded. The primary and only resident of the building was the congregation, until Town Hall purchased it in 1998.

The architect of the original building was George Foote Dunham from Portland. He also built the Christian Science Church in Seattle that is located in the University District.
The popular style of Roman Revival was employed to build the church. Just like other Christian Science churches, it bore resemblance with a public building, without any religious symbolism either outside or inside.

Town Hall Seattle, is characterized with the presence of a huge portico with 62 story columns, opposing the Eighth Avenue. It also has a central dome with an oculus, elaborate windows with pilasters, enormous art glass windows and a balcony. The 4 sides of the Town Hall building are coated with terracotta and white glazed material, which glows after rain and can reflect light in winter.

The interior of Town Hall in Seattle has numerous remarkable features as well. There is a small stage in the ground floor that served as the original rostrum for church services. The Tiffany-style art-glass lighting fixtures in working condition can be found in the Lobby. The curved wooden church benches with fitted backs, the central dome and the vaulted ceiling create a traditional ambiance of architecture.

Town Hall Seattle is a must visit place in the city and very prominent for its exquisite architecture.
