Situated in the US state of Washington, lying just to the south of the US- Canadian border in King County, the city of Seattle is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. In the year 2005, Seattle was ranked as the as the most literate city in the US by the researchers at the Central Connecticut University. Quite often regarded as the birthplace of Grunge music and known for the heavy coffee consumption of the residents. The city of Seattle was host to the 1999 meeting of the World Trade Organization.
The city of Seattle has hit the headlines of the newspaper quite a number of times. In the year1889, the city of Seattle faced the Great Fire which fortunately claimed no lives. Another major event which shaped the history of Seattle, was the Klondike Gold rush – the event which made Seattle a major transportation center.

The Alaska -Yukon- Pacific exposition of 1909 paved the way for the establishment of the Washington University. The first general strike in the country was held in the year 1919 in Seattle.
The climate in Seattle is a mild one characterized by dry summer and wet winter.

The major landmarks of the city of Seattle include Columbia Center, Space Needle, Smith Tower, Pike Place market, Fremont Troll, Experience Music Project and new Seattle Central Library among many others. Columbia Center is the tallest building of the city while Smith Tower is the oldest sky scraper. The Space Needle is often used as the image of the city.
