Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society


Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society is a popular museum situated in Seattle, Washington. The mission of the Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society is to collect, preserve and educate about the objects of maritime interest. This non-profit organization was first conceptualized in 1948 and began working officially from 1953. This society is housed at Seattle's Museum of History and Industry, near the University of Washington.

Eminent personalities like Jr. James Gibbs, Austen Hemion, Joe Williamson, Thomas Sandry and Robert Leithead were the five founding members of the Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society. The Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society is often referred to as PSMHS. Collecting and preserving objects and artifacts of historical interest is the basic aim of this society. However the collection gives special emphasis on elements of maritime interest and Pacific Northwest maritime activities.

Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society in Seattle is well manged by a group of volunteers who specifically added unique specimens to the collection of the organization. The archives of Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society include around 4,500 volumes of display objects on maritime themes. More than 100 maritime periodicals and almost 60,000 historic maritime images are exhibited on the lower floor of the Museum. This collection can only be viewed with prior appointment on Thursday and Saturday mornings.

The photographic collection of Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society is known as the Williamson Collection. Including more than 15,000 single ship photos and 40,000 negatives, this museum provides a rich collection
reflecting the naval history of America. The images have been carefully cataloged by their name. Images include photographs of sailing ships, ocean-going vessels, shipyards, tugs, pleasure yachts, and popular characters related to the trade and business of maritime during 1890s through the 1970s.

The Puget Sound Maritime Research Library is another center of attraction on the lower level of the Museum. This collection can be viewed only on Thursday and Saturday mornings. The library contains around 4,500 volumes of documents on maritime subjects and more than 100 maritime periodicals. The library also features many volumes on the British, American and German Navies. Books on whaling, seamen's narratives, northwest explorers, log books, different steamship lines, ship building companies, sea chanteys, Lloyds' Directories on ships, model making, Merchant Vessels of the U.S. and many sea adventure stories.

The Port Blakely Ship Database in this museum is rich collection of the arrivals and departures of commercial ships from Washington and Port Blakely during the 19th century. Another rare collection is the Lloyd Stadum Collection comprising photographs and historical write ups of U.S. and international ships and shipping companies. The Sea Chest is a quarterly journal published by this organization and is complimentary to all members. Outsiders may buy the journal at $5.00 per copy. Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society is located at a convenient area of Seattle, which is easily reachable from any part of the city. The museum is open approximately from 10.00 a.m to 4.00 p.m. Monthly meetings are held in the hall of the museum, where renowned researchers and scholars gather to enrich the documented collection of the society.
