Seattle Lakes


The most important Seattle lakes are Lake Washington, Lake Union and Lake Sammamish. The eastern portion of Seattle is bordered by the blue Lake Washington, while Lake Union lies in the north. Some of the upscale communities located around Lake Washington are those of Bellevue, Redmond and Kirkland. It also envelops Mercer Island.

Lake Union divides the city into 2 halves in the north of the downtown, while flowing from Lake Washington to Puget Sound. It is worth visiting the 'Hiram M. Chittenden Locks', situated very close to Ballard, a lakeside community. People can easily spot commercial fishing vessels, yachts, motorboats, seaplanes and kayaks on the lake. The houseboat communities on Lake Union feature as one of the many fascinating attractions of Seattle.

The captivating Lake Sammamish, borders the communities of Redmond, Sammamish, Bellevue and Issaquah in Seattle. It attracts a number of people who
are interested in enjoying a waterfront living. The surface area of this lake is 4,893 acres and it has a maximum depth of about 113 feet. Lake Sammamish was previously known as Squak Lake. The name Squak was derived from some local Indian ethnic group.

The above mentioned lakes of Seattle are favored by tourists as they are excellent places of recreation. Tourists can enjoy thrilling water sports in Seattle lakes like sailboating, tubing, water skiing and wave running.
