The roots of Seattle International Film Festival can be traced back to 1985. Since then, the Golden Space Needle Awards have been awarded to the best movie voted by the audience.

The Seattle International Film Festival in 2006 was special as it celebrated 30 years of films. During the festival, more than 300 films from numerous countries were screened. These movies were viewed by some 160,000 movie-lovers who visited the venue to enjoy all kinds of films. Some of the path breaking films that were screened in 2006 were 'The Heart of the Game', 'Russian Dolls' and 'Wah Wah'.
The 2007 Seattle International Film Festival concluded on 17th June. It was a great success due to the combined efforts of filmmakers, volunteers, speakers, sponsors and everyone involved in it. The celebration went on for 25 days and the festival featured 405 films, over 600 screenings and 107 premieres.
In 2008, the Seattle International Film Festival is scheduled to be held between May 22 and June 15.
