Seattle History is a witness to many decline, booms and restoration. In spite of all this, modern Seattle is a vibrant city which has survived the decays of time. History of Seattle has two distinct phases. Seattle history prior to the arrival of the white settlers and the evolution of the city after that.
The founding of Seattle is associated with the arrival of the Denny Party on November 13, 1851 at Alki Point. Arthur A Denny was the leader of the party. They were in search of a settlement which suited their taste. After a lot of speculation they settled down on the islands of the east shore of Elliott Bay. During the 1860s and 1870s Seattle experienced a boom in the wood industry. Rail roads were built and the population of the city also increased manifold. At that time, most of the houses in downtown Seattle were made of wood. On June 6, 1889 the city was razed to the ground by the Great Seattle Fire. The city was rebuilt but this time stone and brick mortars were used in construction.
The Anti Chinese Riot in Seattle was a significant event in Seattle history. Chinese settlers came to Seattle and were mainly employed as laborers who were constantly engaged in laying down the rail tracks. The riot was a result of the severe outburst of anti Chinese sentiments that was brewing for several years. This riot was planned and organized by the Knights of Labor Organization.
The Seattle General Strike in the year 1919 is regarded as a landmark event in the long history of Seattle. The strike was called by the working people with a demand for higher wages. This strike started from February 6, 1919 and lasted for 7 days. The strike was first of its kind in the labor history. The silent protest of the workers had completely stopped and paralyzed the great city. This was an example to the whole world that if united the workers could achieve anything.
These significant events changed the course of history of Seattle. The city today is a vibrant, commercial, cultural and an educational center.
