Gypsy Rose Lee


Gypsy Rose Lee is also famous as Louise Hovick and Rose Louise Hovick. This internationally known actress, theatrical entertainer and writer of Seattle was born on February 9, 1911 and expired on April 26, 1970. Rose Lee was the only universally known and loved name in the field of striptease. After marveling in the arts of acting and performing, she gave a new definition to the art of stripping. Gypsy Rose Lee was a rare talent in the world of parody. She possessed the aesthetic sense of writing novels and plays. Her name prominently flashed in the journals of the 1939 New York World's Fair. She starred in several films and became an esteemed television celebrity. The biography of Gypsy Rose Lee is well documented in one of her books titled "Gypsy", which was transformed into a Broadway musical and a famous motion picture.

Louise Hovick was born of her mother- Rose Thompson Hovick and John Hovick, who was an advertising salesman of a newspaper. Louise Hovick had a sister - Ellen Hovick or June, quite younger to her. After their parents divorced, the girls stayed with their mother and earned by performing at the local music hall. Louise's singing and dancing talents were not too good to appear as a solo performer. Soon she worked hard to earn a name in the theater shows, which brought her into limelight. Her acting techniques were unique and innovative.

humor into her performance.

She became famous for her witty acts and unique strip style. She became one of the most prominent names of the Minsky's Burlesque, with her four years contribution.

After short staying relationships with Eddy Braun and Rags Ragland, she moved to Hollywood. On August 25, 1937 she married Arnold "Bob" Mizzy. After some good releases she returned to New York City and appeared as an actress in many of Michael Todd's films. The writing skill of Rose Lee is well evident in 'The G-String Murders' in 1941. This thriller was made into the film 'Lady of Burlesque' in 1943 casting Barbara Stanwyck. She also wrote many more murder mysteries and suspense thrillers, which were well known among the book lovers. Gypsy Lee later again married William Alexander Kirkland in 1942. Rose Lee was married for a third time to Julio de Diego in 1948, but they finally divorced.

Gypsy Rose Lee died in Los Angeles at probably 59 years of age. She was buried in Inglewood, California. Rose Lee is considered as one of the brilliant actresses and strip teasers of Seattle and America in the greater sense. Alike her combination of brain and beauty, was very rarely noticed in the domain of entertainment in Seattle.
