Goodwill Games Seattle was opened in the city of Seattle on 20th July, 1990. The initiative to organize Goodwill Games Seattle was taken by the businessman of cable television, Ted Turner.

The Goodwill Games was organized for the first time in Moscow in the year of 1986. The Goodwill Games was started as a substitute of the traditional Olympics. The conception of organizing this alternative event of the Olympics came to the mind of the businessman-cum sports enthusiast Ted Turner when the political unrest had led to the boycott of Olympics by US and USSR in 1980 and 1984 respectively. The Seattle Organizing Committee was the prime organizer of the event of Goodwill Games Seattle.

The objective of the Seattle Goodwill games was to tie the people of the world by the band of friendship. For the success of this objective, the Goodwill Games was companioned by conferences, Goodwill Arts Festival and a number of friendship activities. The Goodwill Games in Seattle was attended by nearly 2300 athletes from 54 countries. A total of 21 sports were held in a number of venues in Seattle for 17 consecutive days. The prime venues to hold the events of the Seattle Goodwill Games were the University of Washington in Husky Stadium, King County Aquatics Center, the Edmonson Pavilion. The Government helped considerably in providing resources for the Games.

There was a fair turnout of the local and foreign spectators in the Seattle Goodwill Games. Few of the world records in this Goodwill Games of Seattle were set by Nadezhda Ryashkina and Mike Barrowman in the 10 kilometers walk and 200 meters breaststroke respectively.
