Getting to Seattle


The air route is perhaps the easiest way of getting to Seattle, a vibrant city situated in the Puget Sound area of western Washington State, America. The city lies approximately 113 miles south of the US-Canadian border, to the extreme northwest corner of the United States. The three major ways of getting to Seattle are by air, rail and road. The waterways offer more of a limited service to American states and cities.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is the main hub for all the domestic and international flights operating out of Seattle. The main terminal building is at the Pacific Highway South. This is a major airport of northwest Washington and the Cascades region. It is popularly known as the SeaTac. This airport serves numerous scheduled and chartered flights covering almost all the major destinations of the world including San Juan Islands and Victoria (Canada, Vancouver Island). Alaska Airlines is the major airline operating at SeaTac. Air Canada, British Airways, EVA Airways, Thai Airways are some more airlines operating in this airport. International flights offer nonstop service to the Far East and European countries. The short commuter flights fly 2-3 times per day to and from Wenatchee, Bellingham, Portland and Vancouver.

The Airporter Shuttle, Shuttle Express, Capital Aeroporter Airport Shuttle offer the ground transportation from the SeaTac airport to the various locations in Seattle covering a distance of around 12 miles within 40 mins.

The Amtrak passenger service by the Empire Builder offers a daily rail service connecting Seattle with Portland and Chicago. Coast Starlight passenger service provides trains connecting Los Angeles with Seattle. The stations of Vancouver, British Columbia,

Oregon and Eugene-Springfield are connected to Seattle by the Cascades service.Seattle King Street Station is the railway station of Seattle, served by Amtrak. The journey from Seattle to Vancouver requires about four hours, while from Portland it takes another four hours to reach Seattle.The journey on Coast Starlight line from Seattle to Los Angeles across Portland takes around four and a half hours.

Reaching Seattle by Road

Greyhound Bus Terminal, located at the Stewart Street is the major terminal in Seattle. Several bus companies like Greyhound and Quick Shuttle, offer road transport services to Seattle from British Columbia and other surrounding cities including Portland, San Francisco and Spokane. Many visitors prefer traveling to Seattle by roadways as this gives them an opportunity to enjoy the spectacular scenic beauty enroute. Tourists reach Seattle by car from northwestern Washington and Cascades area via the I-5 and the U.S. Highway 101. The Seattle-Tacoma area connected by the I-405 bypass and Bellevue connected to I-5. I-90 highways provide Seattle an excellent connectivity with Cascades, Spokane, Chicago and Boston. Olympia is connected to the U.S. Highway 101 and runs along a circular route beside the Olympic Peninsula.

Reaching Seattle by Waterways

Washington State Ferries through the 801 Alaskan Way Pier link downtown Seattle to Bainbridge Island, Vashon Island and Bremerton. The same ferry service also connects West Seattle to Vashon Island and Southworth or Kitsap Peninsula. High Speed Catamaran Passenger ferries provide services from Seattle to Victoria and Canada.
