Among the most impressive features of 5th Avenue Theatre is the center dome of the auditorium. It is an exact reproduction of the throne room in the Imperial palace of Beijing. However it is twice the size of the original. The beautiful 'Pearl of Perfection' chandelier is fastened to the teeth of a great dragon. This coiling creature has five toes and each of them stand for an evil spirit, which has to be defeated. The highest attention is paid to both detail and form. Thus the intricate pattern of Ho-ho birds on the organ grilles, balcony walls traced with chrysanthemums, orange blossoms and lotus flowers and the coffered ceilings are incredibly spectacular.
The proscenium arch of 5th Avenue Theatre is extremely elaborate and it borders the entire stage. It features countless Chinese design motifs and certain bas-reliefs of the Summer Palace and the Forbidden City. A pair of Fu Dogs, who has always stood at the entrance of the Chinese imperial palaces, are also found in the theater.
When 5th Avenue Theatre was renovated, it was modified with several changes. These included new auditorium seating and orchestra pit, relocation of the dressing rooms and updating of the technical systems. The furniture, signage and fixtures were left untouched. The final coat of paint still retains its original sheen.
5th Avenue Theatre, noted for its ornamental interior and unique designs, is one of the most extravagant architectural wonders in the entire West Coast.
