The terrain to Santa Fe was so difficult that laying main line tracks became impossible. A branch line from Lamy New Mexico served as the only link by rail route. From 1873 onwards the first tracks reached the Colorado state line. Thereafter the scenario changed gradually and trains began operating from Santa Fe to Chicago, California, Los Angeles, New Mexico, Illinois, Missouri and many other cities. Today trains are a major mode of communication.

Santa Fe trains offer both passenger and freight services. Divided into northern and southern zones the Santa Fe trains have become a major provider of sight seeing entertainment to visitors.
