San Diego Bay, is the beautiful natural harbor lies adjoining to San Diego in California. The San Diego Bay stretches to 12 miles (19 km) in length and 3 miles (4.8 km) in width. Other cities on the bay include Chula, Coronado, National City, Vista and Imperial Beach.
A thin strip of land known as the Silver Strand separates the west border of the Bay from the Pacific Ocean. Towards the Silver Strand's northern end lies the North Island where Naval Air Station is situated. There also lies US Navy's Nuclear Submarine Base (Point Loma Naval Base at Ballast Point). The San Diego International Airport lies next to the San Diego Bay on the opposite side of the Harbor Drive. The shallow portion of the Bay in the south serves as evaporation ponds for separation of salt from sea water.
Many museum ships like the USS Midway and the Star Of India are anchored in the bay. The harbor and its adjoining areas are under the management of the Port of San Diego . The State Legislature of California has empowered the Port of San Diego with an independent tax base and police force.
