San Diego is the seventh largest city in the United States and the second largest city of California. Many US military bases including US Navy ports, Marine Corps bases, and Coast Guard stations are located here. San Diego is also the home port of the largest naval fleet in the world. Tourism plays an important part in San Diego's economy. It has 27 km of beaches and a mild climate, as well as many historic attractions

Area: It has a total area of 372 square miles (963.6 square km).

Per Capita Income: The per capita income of the city is $23,609.

Population: According to an estimate, San Diego has a population of 1.3 million in the year 2005.

Age Structure: The age structure of the population of San Diego is as follows: 24 percent of the population are under the age of 18, 12.4 percent are between the ages of 18 to 24, another 34 percent are between the ages of 25 to 44. A 19.1 percent of the people are between the ages of 45 and 64 years. The 65 years or above age group accounts for 10.5 percent of the population.

Racial Makeup: African-Americans account for 7.51 percent of the population. Asians make up 13.44 percent of the population. Native Americans constitute a miniscule 0.38 percent of the people. Hispanics make up 25.38 percent of the population, while Whites account for 49.27 percent of the population.

Economy: San Diego has a very good natural harbor and because of this it is an important port of entry. The main industries of San Diego are aerospace, electronics, and shipbuilding industries. It is also an important center of the wireless communication industry, biomedical research, biotechnology industries, and oceanography. Other things that are manufactured in San Diego are industrial equipments and machinery, Computer Hardware and software, apparel, and processed foods. The tourist industry is also an important part of San Diego's economy.


Climate: San Diego experiences near perfect weather all year round. Due to the proximity to the Pacific Ocean, summers are cool and winters are warm in comparison with other, more inland, areas in southern California. The fall months are the hottest time of the year. Dry easterly winds blow frequently during the fall, taking temperatures up to 90o F. Snow and sub zero temperatures is very rare in San Diego. The average annual rainfall is less than 10 inches. San Diego's pleasant climate makes it a year round tourist destination. The days are bright and sunny with low humidity ideal for sightseeing and for many sports.

Government Type: San Diego has a Council-Manager form of government. The Mayor and the City Council appoints the City Manager. Eight City Council members are elected from their council districts. The chief legal advisor and misdemeanor prosecutor of the city is the City Attorney.
