San Antonio TX is one of the topmost tourist destinations in the United States. An estimated 20 million visit the city attractions every year. The River Walk in San Antonio TX or the Paseo Del Rio is a popular Texas landmark, second in fame only to the Alamo. By the sides of the San Antonio River, this 2.5 mile stretch of landscaped and beautifully maintained riverfront is responsible for bringing in about US$ 800 million worth of tourism business to Texas annually. Crossed by picturesque footbridges, gargoyles and old fashioned street lamps, the River Walk is also known as the American Venice.
Originally, the Spanish Explorers used the San Antonio River for supplying water to the many Missions they had set up, including the Alamo . However the river was notorious for flooding. Floods in 1921 were responsible for the deaths of over fifty people and causing enormous damage to property. After much deliberation, the city authorities agreed to architect Robert Hugman's proposal of reconstructing the area and converting it to an urban commercial park with shaded walks, boat rides, apartments and shopping centers. Paseo Del Rio Association set up in 1959 oversees maintenance and infrastructure development of the area.
The San Antonio River Walk offers tourists a unique blend of history with entertainment, exciting river cruises, Mariachi Bands, wonderful sightseeing opportunities and delicious Tex Mex cuisine! It is the liveliest place in the city with a fun filled fiesta atmosphere. The River Walk Parrot is the official mascot sporting a huge sombrero.
