Portland is a city in the U.S state of Maine. The city was first settled by the British in 1632 and was named "Falmouth." in1658. During King Philip's War in 1675, it was destroyed by the Wampanoag people. Though it recovered, the American Revolutionary War in 1775 destroyed it again. The city later reincarnated and developed as a commercial port and grew rapidly to become a shipping center. In 1786, the people in Falmouth formed a separate town and named it "Portland." Maine became a state and Portland was selected as its capital in 1820. But later in 1832, the capital was shifted to Augusta. Portland is now the largest city in the U.S. state of Maine. It is also the cultural, social and economic capital of the state as well as the county seat of Cumberland County.
