The city of Phoenix is the capital of the state of Arizona in USA. Phoenix came into existence on25 th February, 1881 and has established itself into the most thickly settled state of Arizona. Housing a population of 1,461,575, (according to estimation of 2005), Phoenix has emerged as the sixth largest city of USA. Phoenix is located on the banks of saltriver which remains dry for most of the time of the year.
Phoenix was primarily a deserted land until it came to the notice of Jack Swilling of Wickenburg, Arizona, in 1867,who foresaw the possibilities of agriculture in the place. Under his initiative, canals were dug and other arrangements made for agriculture. The community of the farmers in the area came to be called as Swilling's Mill to honor his name. The economy of Phoenix was mainly agricultural relying on cotton and citrus farming. At present Phoenix has grown into an industrial city into a major industrial city housing three Fortune 1000 companies: Electronics Corporation Avnet, The Apollo Group and mining company Phelps Dodge Corporation. Other important companies include Honeywell, Intel, and American Express Groups who have different operational centers at Phoenix. Arizona State University has one of its campuses located at Phoenix which draws a large number of students and tourists.

Phoenix is the seat of the government and is the home to the state legislature. The administration of the city is run by the city council which consists of the Mayor and the 8 City councils members.
Phoenix experiences a very hot and dry climate with the average summer temperature shooting to 100 degree Fahrenheit. Monsoons in the month of July increase the humidity. However the winter months are pleasant with lots of sunshine.
Phoenix is the abode of many famous buildings like Arizona Historical Society Museum , Arizona Science center,Hall of Fame, Phoenix Museum of History among many others. Many celebrated movies have been shot in this place like Psycho,Raising Arizona, Song of the South, Waiting to exhale. Phoenix houses several major sports franchisees. The Sky Harbor International Airport connects it to the rest of the world.
