Phoenix is the capital and the largest city of the southwestern state of Arizona. Phoenix is the sixth largest city in the United States. The city has a large number of golf courses, which makes it one of the most popular resort towns in America. As it’s the capital of Arizona, many residents are employed by the government. Population: According to a census of 2004, it has a population of 1,418,041 people.

Age Structure: A 28.9 percent of the population of Phoenix is under the age of 18. Another 10.9 percent are from 18 to 24 years of age. A 33.2 percent of the people are between the ages of 25 to 44 years. An 18.8 percent of the people belong to the 45 to 64 years age group. An 8.1 percent of the people are 65 years of age or older.

Racial Makeup: African-Americans constitute 4.68 percent of the population. Asians account for 1.88 percent of the population. Native North Americans make up 1.66 percent of the population. Hispanics constitute 34.1 percent of the population, while Whites account for 55.82 percent of the population.

Economy: Phoenix is located in the rich agricultural region of the Salt River Valley. Phoenix is an important

center of research and development, electronics, telecommunications, semiconductors, and the aerospace industry. The industries that form the core of its manufacturing base are food processing and the production of aircraft parts, electrical appliances, agricultural chemicals, machinery, tools, plastic, and wood products, cosmetics and leather goods. Phoenix also has a seasonal tourism industry and a growing golf industry.

Climate: The climate of Phoenix can be classified as arid and semitropical. There is an average of 300 sunny days in a month. On most days from June to September, the temperature mark crosses 100o F (30 o C). Thunderstorms occur the entire year through, but they are most common from July to September. These can often cause tornadoes. The winters are quite warm throughout. The winter temperatures average 20oC to 25oC. Many tourists flock to Phoenix to enjoy the year-round warm climate. Snow is very rarely seen in Phoenix. Due to its warm climate throughout the year, winter tourism is a big industry of Phoenix.

Rainfall: The annual rainfall of Phoenix is 211 mm.

Government Type: Phoenix became one of the first cities in 1913 to adopt a council manager form of government. The city has won many prizes for the best run city government in the world. The Phoenix City Council is made up of a Mayor and eight City Council members elected by the people for four-year terms. The Mayor is elected at large, meaning that residents in all parts of the city cast their votes to elect the Mayor. Council members are elected by the voters from each of the eight council districts. The Mayor and the councilmen have equal voting powers to make laws and set policies.
