The African-American Museum in Philadelphia was established in 1976, commemorating the U.S. Bicentennial. The mission of African American Museum in Philadelphia is to collect, preserve and interpret the materialistic and intellectual culture of the African American community in Philadelphia, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Delaware Valley and the other parts of America. The Museum depicts the lifestyle of the African Americans with respect to different aspects like social and family life, civil rights movement, the arts, entertainment, architecture, politics, medicine, sports, law, religion and technology of the mutual community.
Several public programs are hosted along with the exhibitions, workshops and demonstrations, dance performances, concerts, films, story telling, recitations, seminars, book signings and lectures. Ever since its establishment, the museum has collected over 400,000 objects, documents and images associated to fine art and folk art, furnishings and costumes, photographs, memorabilia, photo negatives, books and periodicals. The collections help in extensive research, exhibitions and displays. The African-American Museum presently houses four galleries and one auditorium, each of them exhibits one of the three themes, namely the African Diaspora, the Contemporary Narrative and the Philadelphia Story.

The tourists can view the museum's rare collection from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm from Tuesday to Saturday and from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm. on Sundays. Touching the exhibits is strictly forbidden.
