St Helena School


St Helena School founded in 1927, is one of the well-known pre kindergarten schools of Philadelphia. The school provides education to students from different communities and backgrounds. The location of St Helena School is in the extreme north central part of Philadelphia. Most of the students from this school are from the Olney region in Philadelphia.

History of St. Helena School

St Helena School was founded on September 6, 1927 with 438 students. The parish school was opened with the aim to impart Catholic education to the students of the Olney area. Six sisters from St Joseph's were appointed as teachers to educate the children students. Over the years, as the student population increased, additional space was required. In 1959 an additional building was constructed to accommodate the 1,350 students in the school.

St Helena school has undergone changes with its expansion. This is duly reflected in the demographics of enrollment in this school. Previously, only sisters of St Josephs were recruited as faculty and the staff of this school, whereas, today teachers from other fields are also recruited. Before, majority of the students in this school were either German or of Irish origin, today the school boasts of a multicultural population.

As a catholic school, St Helena imparts the tenets of Gospel to its students. They believe that their academic programs should be designed to impart the teachings of the Catholic church and instill a sense of service in their students. Student population in St Helena School in Philadelphia is a judicious mix of students from diverse cultural backgrounds like the American Indian/ Alaskan, Hispanic, Black(Non- Hispanic) and Whites (Non- Hispanic). The blacks constitute 35.64% of the total population followed by Asian/Pacific Islander constituting 29.6% of the total student population.
v St Helena School at Philadelphia would be completing its glorious 80 years in the near future. With a mission to impart Catholic education, the school with its expert faculty is all geared to meet the challenges of the new millennium.
